(Open to participants everywhere)
Noise Intercepted is a series of 10 experience-activated noise challenges that prompt participants to listen, observe and interact with their urban soundscape in new and unlikely ways.
Noise Intercepted is an evolution of a project we produced back in 2011 called Moments Intercepted, in which we sent 112 participants across North America 10 creative challenges in a 1-month blast.
Participants had 48-hours to respond impulsively to these challenges, in whatever means they so desired, using whatever materials they preferred. “Turn Something Green.” “Make something old new.” “Play with fire.”
Noise Intercepted takes this idea of spontaneous creation, but with a twist. Less emphasis will be placed on responding impulsively; more emphasis will be placed on reflection, observation, and physically interacting with your urban soundscape.
How does Noise Intercepted work?
Over the course of 4 months you’ll be sent 10 noise challenges/ creative prompts via text message and email. You’ll have exactly 1-week to respond to each of these challenges and document your findings in a creative way online.
Some examples of noise challenges we might throw at you:
● Spend at least one hour observing the ebbs and flows of rush-hour traffic in your city or town from close (but safe) proximity. Document your experience. Share your discoveries.
● Record a familiar sound in your city and remix into something unfamiliar.
● Pick one song on your mp3 player and play it on repeat. Today, you can only listen to this one song alone. Listen to it on your way to work, or on your way to school. Listen to it on your lunch break. Take a long walk and listen to it again, and again, over and over. Document your experience. Share your findings.
Expectations of Collaborators
By registering for this project, you are agreeing to participate in 10 random noise challenges. You can choose to interpret each challenge however you see fit, in relation to your own personal art practice, or in relation to your own personal interests. Registrants will create a user-account and are expected to post their findings in exactly one week from the day that the noise challenge is issued.
Who can register?
Anyone and everyone.
How do I register?
Fill out the form on this page to create a user account. Once your account is approved (gotta keep out the spam) you will receive a confirmation email. If you experience any problems with this registration form, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Your first noise challenge will be sent out on March 7th. All following noise challenges will be sent at random. (Trust us, you’ll have fun.)
